Nintendo sure is the master of puzzling corporate decisions. Surely, the company realizes that people are still confused about the whole Wii/Wii U naming structure; but here they are again, releasing what is literally the red-headed stepchild of the Wii family, the Wii Mini. Later this month, confused parents will head out to toy stores and make some of the biggest mistakes of their collective adult lives by purchasing the Wii Mini instead of the Wii U. Christmas will come early for little Johnny as he discovers the red-and-black box of joy that features the following endearing back-of-the-box bulletpoints:

  • No online support, despite being packed-in with a game that heavily relies on it,
  • No SD Card slot, ergo no WiiWare
  • No component output (enjoy your glorious 480i games… in 2013)
  • No GameCube support

Just… why.

Greetings, Ninty folks! Looks like it’s going to be a pretty busy month for the Big N, what with Animal Crossing: New Leaf dropping in a few days! For now, let’s see what they cooked for us this week.

Wii U:

  • One of my favorite matching games on the Gameboy, Yoshi enters the Virtual Console fray, wooo!
  • Another retro adventure title, Spelunker, struts its way out of caves to the VC.
  • Trine 2: Director’s Cut is on sale for $9.99, if you passed on this sidescrolling game during its release. The sale will be until June 27th.
  • Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth, now at $29.99, if you have the urge to battle for earth.

3DS:

animal_crossing_new_leaf_logo

  • Everyone’s probably heard of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and has held on to their money to plonk on DataBlitz once it arrives on June 9th, so no more introduction is necessary. If you ran out of copies and have 6,000 blocks in your micro SD card to spare, you can download it via the eShop.

Wii:

  • Sengoku 3 graces the Virtual Console, so I guess you can still keep your Wii plugged or whatever.

I guess you know what I’ll be getting this week. See you in the village!

This week on the Nintendo eShop saga! Is the Wii U still going straight to the shitter?

Wii U:

  • Super Metroid is at $0.30 until the Philippine Independence Day. That is super cheap, so might as well get your Wii U’s ass working with a classic game.
  • LEGO Batman 2: DC Superheroes will be available on May 21, as well as
  • Resident Evil Revelations that you can also pick up in other platforms.

So yes, still pretty much dead.

Glorious 3DS gets the following:

  • Mega Man 5 for $4.99, in case you want to replay a retro goodie
  • Harvest Moon for $4.99 is out as well!
  • Swords and Soldiers 3D from Circle Entertainment is available at $6.99.  You can also catch our two Circle game reviews here and here.
  • First up on the Guild02 series is The Starship Damrey by Level-5 at $7.99.
  • Bowling Bonanza 3D at $5.99, if you’re into that sort of thing, and
  • Dress to Play: Magic Bubbles zzzz (oh, at $3.99)

Wii:

  • King of Fighters ’99 at 900 Wii Points

DSiWare:

  • California Super Sports is at $4.99

This week’s pick for me will be The Starship Damrey, definitely! I will probably review it, if none of the lazy staffers get dibs, so look forward to it!

Club Nintendo just updated its catalog with four new digital games you can redeem using your coins earned from registering games and answering surveys.

If you are still playing with your Wii or even if you have replaced it with a shiny Wii U (in Wii Mode), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES Virtual Console) can be yours for 200 coins. This was a game I played the hell out of back in the SNES days and it’s the first major Squaresoft (now Square-Enix) and Nintendo collaboration.

For your 3DS there’s 3D Classics: Excitebike which is cool for 150 coins but if you bought your 3DS near the time it launched then you should already have this because it was free and you cried salty tears.

There is also Maboshi’s Arcade (Wii) for 150 coins and Art Style: Aquia (3DS) for 100 coins. I don’t want to talk about them because I think they suck ass.

You’re welcome.

These games are available only until June 2 and when that comes Nintendo will replace them with another set because such is the fate of  games. *gets off from podium*

Although I haven’t even finished the first two games of Operation Rainfall (also known as the nerd petition that worked), publisher XSEED sent out a press release announcing that OpRain’s final game Pandora’s Tower is coming 16th of April at a budget price of $40.

Pandora’s Tower is an action RPG about a girl who eats flesh. Yum.

XSEED also released a gameplay trailer with the announcement (see embed).

XSEED Games Announces Pandora’s Tower to Launch April 16

Eagerly Anticipated Wii-Exclusive Action RPG Comes to North America Next Month, Website Now Live

Torrance, Calif., (April 3, 2013) – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, today announced that the hugely anticipated action role-playing title, Pandora’s Tower™, will be launching in North America on April 16 at an MSRP of $39.99, exclusively for Wii™. To celebrate, XSEED Games has released an all-new gameplay trailer showing off the many diverse dungeons, action-oriented gameplay and traversal mechanics of Pandora’s Tower. Fans can also check out the game’s all-new website at: www.pandorastowerwii.com.

Developed in Japan by Ganbarion together with Nintendo, Pandora’s Tower takes the familiar maiden in distress theme and turns it on its head, asking the protagonist to slay over a dozen giant monsters and collect their flesh in order to lift a curse that has befallen his lover. The game opens in the Kingdom of Elyria, where an unassuming singer named Elena succumbs to a wretched curse during a festival performance. Bearing an arcane mark on her back, she begins a seemingly irreversible transformation into a cursed monster. It comes to pass that only the brave Aeron, a young ex-soldier whose heart has forever been pledged to Elena, can save her.

Through the help of a mysterious merchant named Mavda, Aeron learns that he must descend into The Scar, a massive chasm tied down by twelve chains connected to a floating island in its center, atop which sit thirteen interconnected towers. There, he must use his sword and various other weapons in addition to the sacred Oraclos Chain to battle his way through each tower and extract the flesh of the boss “masters” that dwell within. Only by consuming the flesh of all of the masters can Elena reverse her ongoing transformation. But the clock is ticking! The longer Aeron takes to vanquish each beast, the less human Elena becomes, affecting her character and the game’s final outcome in a profound manner.

Pandora’s Tower was developed in Japan by Ganbarion in conjunction with Nintendo, exclusively for Wii. The game will be published by XSEED Games in North America and will start shipping to retailers on April 16, 2013 at an MSRP of $39.99. The game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB.
