Last May 21, 2013 marked the release of France-based electronic music duo Daft Punk’s fourth studio album: Random Access Memories (RAM). I’m no fan of electronic music, as a matter of fact, it’s no secret to people I know that I do not find club music and clubbing exactly appealing. I loathe the scene (not the people) because I like hanging out in places where you don’t have to scream into each other’s ears to make conversation. If that’s the case, why the hell am I even talking about Daft Punk, right? It all points to the collaboration between the eccentric duo (wearing those crazy helmets), Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation for the animated feature Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5system. Yes, I gobbled up almost anything anime back in the day but then my appreciation for Daft Punk quickly took a life of its own and here I am finding myself compelled to grab their latest album since 2005, Random Access Memories just for some feel good catchy tunes to loop all day as I deal with life’s daily grind.
What I love about Daft Punk songs is the absence of obnoxious high pitched vocal samples from a lot of club music mixes by “DJ this-and-that” and doesn’t stick to the requirement of having that extremely loud and pounding repetitive bass beat all the time. Granted that there is a distinct possibility for other electronic music acts that don’t necessarily fall into my generalization of club music, I must point out that I’m not on an all-out war with the club scene and that I’m satisfied with just Daft Punk for my electronic music fix. Daft Punk isn’t the only act worth listening to and if anybody reading this wants to broaden their horizons, Lord Goolge will be more than happy to help you out. Plus, I absolutely buy their gimmick of wearing those helmets to look like robots really cool, I mean they just got featured on GQ and all so they’ve got to be doing something right.
I can tell you that the whole album is worth the $6.99 (on iTunes) here are my favorites from the album with Doin’ it Right (feat. Panda Bear) being my current song in infinite loop today.
- Track 3 – Giorgio by Moroder
- Track 5 – Instant Crush (feat. Julian Casablancas)
- Track 6 – Lose Yourself to Dance (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Track 7 – Touch (feat. Paul Williams)
- Track 11 – Fragments of Time (feat. Todd Edwards)
- Track 12 – Doin’ It Right (feat. Panda Bear)
The great thing about the world we live in is the fact that people who suck at describing music don’t really have to write about it and just point people to iTunes to sample their music or go on to youtube and look up the songs for a full length preview of what you are potentially buying into. So hit up “Random Access Memories” on a search engine and check it out.
