PlayStation 4

As avid gamers, we always want to be ahead of the game (awful pun intended) by having the latest gadgets that enable us to play all the best games, either on the big screen or on the go. Y’see, games aren’t just played on consoles or handhelds nowadays: gaming is now a ubiquitous enough hobby that one can enjoy on any piece of tech with a screen. For instance, here’s my personal list of gadgets that I enjoy playing games on!

IMG_26171. HP Envy 15″ and Macbook Pro Retina 13″ laptops – I only play Diablo III Reaper of Souls and a bunch of Steam games on PC so I fire one of these two from time to time. I use the HP when I’m docked as it is heavier but it’s where I mostly play because of the bigger screen,  hard disk and a fuller keyboard. I use the Macbook when I’m stuck outside and more for work, but I also have a limited number games installed on that machine (like yep, Diablo III; if you haven’t figured out, I’m a D3 addict).

2. PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS – If I have to go out and I know I have to wait long for something (pay for a bill, or wait for someone to arrive), I almost always carry one of these babies depending on what I am currently playing. The titles are pretty diverse in each so you can always find a few games that will sit on your GOTY of the forever (for me it was Persona 4 Golden and Fire Emblem Awakening).

IMG_2529

3. iPhone 5 – If I have a spare minute (or thirty), I fire up Clash of Clans or one of my favorite Kairosoft titles (now being Ninja Village) to get my gaming fix. LINE also has a bunch of games like Puzzle Bobble (who hasn’t played or got addicted to that game though) but it gets pretty limited because of the fatigue-based mechanic (5 stages at a time, then you have to wait 30 minutes to replenish one stage turn). It’s pretty lightweight as a gaming platform but with millions of users, even Square Enix has picked up the pace and ported some of its most popular titles on iTunes.

4. PlayStation 3, XBOX 360 and Wii U – Exclusive titles and things more epic go to one of these consoles. Admittedly, I haven’t fired up anything recently (probably Wind Waker U from a few months back), but I still have a few discs lying around that I should look into finishing before I get a…

5. PlayStation 4Dragon Age: Inquisition comes out in a few months; I happen to be a big DA fan so this is the title that will make me break the bank to get a unit. Priced competitively and having supported off-screen play through the PS Vita, this is definitely the next step to my gaming progression.

Get ready for an awesome PlayStation month even if you don’t have extra money to buy new games!

First up, PS3 owners get Lara Croft’s latest adventure for zilch. Tomb Raider was one of our top games of last year and the PS4 definitive edition was just released this month so this is an amazing and surprising addition to the IGC.

The PS3 also gets indie love in the form of Thomas Was Alone — an award-winning platformer, and Lone Survivor: Director’s Cut — a survival adventure game.

Going next-gen nets you a free download of the excellent Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition. This co-op twin-stick zombie shooter that was originally released on the PS3 is now coming to the PS4 bundled with all the DLC and updated visuals.

On the handheld side of things we get the 3rd person shooter Unit 13 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP game, playable on Vita). Kinda lame but you can’t beat free, right?

The excellent Tomba! 2 makes an appearance in the PSone classics section of the store as a follow to the original Tomba! that was released a couple of weeks ago. PS2 Classics have Neo Contra which I don’t remember ever playing. Heh.

Sales galore! Aside from the huge list this week, there’s a separate Rockstar Sale going on which you should check out. Bully for under $3 is a steal, my friends.

For fellow PS Plussers we are entitled to Remember Me (starring Renz Verano) on PS3 and Street Fighter X Tekken on Ps Vita for the exciting price of ‘free’.

Awesome month coming for PlayStation Plus members. Sony has announced the February lineup for its Instant Games Collection but this time they made a nifty handy-dandy cool video detailing it. So watch it (embedded above) and be informed/amused.

For those of you who don’t want moving images, here’s a list and a picture:

Outlast (PS4)

Metro: Last Light (PS3)

Payday 2 (PS3)

Remember Me (PS3)  starring Renz Verano.

Street Fighter X Tekken (PS Vita)

ModNation Racers: Road Trip (PS Vita)

Squenix’ successful PC/PS3 MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be gracing Sony’s next (current) generation console officially on April 14th. If you already played this on the PS3 then you are automatically qualified to play the beta which starts on February 22nd. This gives you time to think if you wanna upgrade to the PS4 version.

Square Enix will also release a collector’s edition of the game which will include content from previous PS3 and PC collector’s editions with a Fat Chocobo Mount and a Wind-Up Moogle Minion.

I’m done with MMO’s myself but I’ll be sure to at least try the beta and ogle at the graphics.

P102027730lives.net was at the Glorietta Activity Center yesterday to cover the launch of the PlayStation 4 in the Philippines. The event called ‘Play the Future First’ unveiled the much awaited next-generation console to Filipino gamers at the SRP of PHP 24,999. The event is hosted by seasoned radio jocks Gino Quillamor and Riki Flores who also demo’d some of the games on the PS4. The launch was held in partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong Limited (SCEH) Singapore Branch.

Opening the event is the President and Managing Director of Sony Philippines, Mr. Yasushi Asaoka. “Sony has always been in touch with what the gaming community needs and wants. We have always strived to give consumers the best experience in home entertainment, which includes  the thrilling roster of PlayStation. It is with great pride that we bring the newest PlayStation 4 in the market today,” Asaoka mentioned during his speech.

Mr. Tomoyuki Haba, who is the Singapore Branch Manager of SCEH also spearheaded the launch in other SEA countries. He mentioned during his speech that the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 4.2 million copies already, according to their Tokyo office. The PS Vita has also jumped in sales in anticipation for the PS4‘s release. SCEH also has a new plan on the warranty service for 6 South East Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Customers who buy the PS4 are entitled to have an extra ONE YEAR WARRANTY COVERAGE in countries where the product has been officially launched (including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia), and the warranty will be valid throughout these countries. Wherever the customers are, they can also have the repair service for their products.

New PS Vita color with light blue back

On stage, Sony Philippines head of marketing Ms. Zhorida Lipayon presented the new game consoles that are launching locally. First up was the new PS Vita system which features a more streamlined form factor and an 1GB internal memory card, is 20-percent slimmer and 15-percent lighter than the original version, making the portable entertainment system even easier to carry. It also comes in different colors such as lime green, light blue, pink black, khaki, black and white. The PlayStation Vita 2000 Wifi is sold at PHP 11,999 locally. Accessories are also available and are sold separately.

Meanwhile, since its unveiling in September 2013, PS Vita TV has become one of the most anticipated Sony products. PS Vita TV is a new entertainment system within the PlayStation family that will allow users to easily access various content on their TV at home. The new system adopts chip sets and system software of the PlayStation Vita portable entertainment system and its size is 6.5cm × 10.5cm, smallest of all PlayStation platforms that connect to a TV. On stage, two girls demo’d the Japanese version of God Eater 2 with one playing on the PS Vita and the other on the PS Vita TV which played flawlessly. I’ve also tried the demo unit on the floor and played Dragon’s Crown which is installed in the system’s memory card and it played without a hitch. I am just not sure if the memory card is the same as the PS Vita‘s and if it can be plugged straightaway from Vita to Vita TV.

Oh myyyy.

According to the press release, “To continue servicing the gaming community, a separate retail launch will be held for the Sony PS Vita TV“. This hopefully means we’ll be able to finally see The Philippines as an available option in the PS Store soon.

The PS4 is a next generation computer entertainment system that redefines rich and immersive game play with powerful graphics, speed, deeply integrated social capabilities and innovative second-screen features utilizing devices such as PS Vita. By utilizing PS Camera, users can expand gaming ways of PS4 and enjoy different gaming experience. The hosts demo’d some of the games on stage which utilized the PS Camera like Play with Asobi and Air Hockey which seemed fun.

Seriously, it’s called Magma Red.

There is also a wide range of peripherals for PS4 that are introduced such as the color variation for PS4 Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK 4) in “Magma Red” and “Wave Blue”, PlayStation Camera, DUALSHOCK4 Charging Station and PS4 Vertical Stand. Once you touch these babies, there’s definitely no going back to the DS3, at least this is what I felt while I was playing Crank on the demo floor. There was also a demo of the Personal 3D Viewer where attendees can sample the experience of playing Assassin’s Creed Black Flag up close.

The PlayStation 4 was also made available during the press launch. The payment terms were cash or a straight credit card charge of PHP 24,999 or PHP 26,999 (with camera) on site.

Dekamori Senran Kagura, described by Famitsu as a “hyper big-breasted cooking-rhythm game”, is set to be released in Japan on March 20 of this year.

The game will have both a PS Vita and a PSP version.

There are two more Senran Kagura spin-offs planned in addition to the cooking game: Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is a side-scrolling action game that serves as a sequel of the original for the 3DS and Senran Kagura: Estival Versus which is a fighting game for multiple PlayStation devices.

Boing. Boing. Boing.

30lives recently received an invitation to attend the press conference for the Philippine release of Sony’s next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 4. Dubbed as ‘Play the Future First’, the event will be held at Glorietta Activity Center on January 14th (Tuesday) at 11:00 AM.

We are definitely excited to cover what might be one of the biggest gaming industry events for the year, and we’re only still on the second week of January! I hope we get to demo the console as well as some of the biggest titles that will release this 2014. Keep checking the site for our full coverage coming soon!

The third game to grace the next-gen Instant Game Collection is the survival indie game Don’t Starve for the PS4. In it you play a scientist trapped in limbo where you’ll need to use the available resources to not die. It is also a game that teaches us that rabbits are yummy.

If you are still sporting that retro machine called the PS3 (heh) then you can download Ninja Theory’s Dante reboot, DMC: Devil May Cry for it. In it, you play Keanu Reeves.

Sorry Vita owners. Nothing for you this week. Boo.

Strategy Role Playing Game Natural Doctrine is set for a February 22nd release in Japan (a.k.a. Japanese PS4 launch). It’s from Kadokawa Games — favorite publisher of Suda 51 (Killer is Dead, Lollipop Chainsaw) — and Patapon director Atsushi Ii. The game will be available for all three active Sony consoles: The PS3, PS4 and the PS Vita.

Judging from what we’ve seen so far, Natural Doctrine will let go of the traditional grid-based SRPG in favor of a more free-flowing movement system. If this turns out to be something like Valkyria Chronicles, then me says absolutely DO WANT!

Here’s hoping for a western announcement soon!

We all know that the PlayStation 4 will launch November in North America. But unlike Japan which will have to wait ’till February next year, TGS just confirmed we’ll have our PS Quadruples by December this year for the rest of Asia Region 3 (Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan, etc… and by extension, Philippines)

I think I know where our salary bonuses will be funneled into. *Gasp*

The Japan Sony Press Conference is still ongoing as I write this but the PS Vita part of it has just concluded.

Here’s what they’ve shown:

New PS Vita 2000 series. Thinner and lighter and presumably cheaper, it looks exactly like the original PS Vita but it now sports a cheaper LCD screen (original uses a glorious OLED screen), comes with 1GB memory, and will come in 6 different colors at launch. It will also be bundled with a 90 day PlayStation Plus subscription.

PS Vita Greatest Hits Line. Just like the PS3, select PS Vita games will be sold at a cheaper price point.

Cheaper memory cards and a new 64GB card. I need this.

Soul Sacrifice Delta anounced for March 2014. “This is a brand new version with brand new elements and brand new items which gives the unique flavor of Soul Sacrifice.” says creator Keiji Inafune. Mmmkay.

Phantasy Star Nova announced. This is a non-MMO version of Phantasy Star Online 2. It’s playable offline and 4-player online co-op ala MonHan.

Special Edition PS Vita Bundles Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD. Self explanatory.

Pretty exciting stuff. And because the PS Vita is region free, you don’t need to wait for a western release if you really want these.

In the upcoming Kojima game/movie (lol) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, there’s a female character shown in the E3 trailer wielding a rifle and a bra. We learned that the character is named “The Quiet” and will play an important role in the game.

Playing that character who will play an important role in the game is actress Stefanie Joosten. She will provide voice work and much of the motion capture for The Quiet. The embedded video shows how they converted the actress into a digital representation of herself as the character, as Mr. Kojima strokes his chin in satisfaction.

At the beginning of Sony’s Gamescom 2013 presscon, Sony Worldwide Studios head-honcho Shuhei Yoshida presented the PS4’s interface in a very relaxed way. He browsed the menus, checked a couple of games, went into and watched an ongoing Killzone: Shadowfall game stream, then proceeded to join the game. He then uploaded a screenshot and capped it all with a tweet to start the show.

Very classy, Sony. I really like how the interface shows all info about the game (like trophy count and friends, etc) just by hovering on it.

Can’t wait for launch.

Capcom just announced in the San Diego Comic Convention the return of their elite ninja agent Strider Hiryu in a brand new Strider game in development for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and next generation consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox One (still no love for the Wii U here I see) and is scheduled for release in 2014.

Like most modern-day renditions of classic games, Strider stays true to its roots and promises you the same old fast-paced and fluid action the original Strider games were known for before Strider Hiryu became a jobber in Capcom’s cross over fighting games. Check out the first trailer below:

Strider is being developed by Double Helix Games in conjunction with Capcom and is scheduled for digital release in early 2014.

The most requested feature that did not come for the PlayStation 3 is the ability to chat with friends on your PSN list no matter what game or application you are using. The Xbox 360 has it, even Sony’s handheld, the PlayStation Vita has it, but the feature did not come to the PS3 with Sony citing “insufficient system RAM”.

Now with the PlayStation 4, cross-game voice chat is now a thing. Not just that, but all console packages come with a basic headset that plugs in to the controller for voice chat. It’s nothing fancy but at least you will able to do voice chat right out of the box and of course you can still use your fancy headsets as long as it uses the standard 3.55mm jacks. It also comes with the vertical stand and a charging dock for the Dualshock 4 controller — these things you had to buy separately before.

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida was interviewed by the cunning people at Engadget and revealed that Sony has a couple of devkits of the Oculus Rift. “We’ve got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it”, confirmed the Sony boss during a roundtable at E3.

When asked about possible PlayStation 4 support for the coming VR headset, Yoshida said “no comment” with a big smile, according to Engadget. The smile was moot though, as Yoshida is known to be in a perpetual state of smile especially when sharing PS4 games.

After Final Fantasy director Tetsuya Nomura revealed the 15th core Final Fantasy game at the Sony E3 presentation, he also left us with a teaser trailer of the third Kingdom Hearts game for the PlayStation 4.

Okay, so here is the official reveal trailer for Final Fantasy XV as revealed from the Sony PlayStation Presscon earlier today.

The rumors were true — Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being re-branded as the 15th core installment in the franchise. It is announced for the PS4.

It was also announced that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will also have a PlayStation 4 version.
